A note from our founder
Why I built DietOwl
I refused to take medication for the rest of my life.
When I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, that was my first thought. Not fear. Not acceptance. Refusal.
So I went looking for a way out. I saw dietitians. Multiple of them. Each one handed me a list of foods I had never eaten in my life and called it a plan. No explanation. No context. No follow-up when I quietly gave up two weeks later.
One day I strapped on a continuous glucose monitor and watched my blood sugar spike after a single moong dal dosa. The breakfast I had been eating for months, believing it was healthy.
That was the moment. Data meeting reality. And nobody had ever shown me that before.
My condition was not a disease I caught. It was the quiet result of decades of eating the way my family had always eaten, without ever understanding what that food was doing inside my body. South Indian meals. Large portions. Late dinners. No movement. The same cycle, generation after generation.
Here is what I learned: India's health crisis is not a medical problem. It is a behaviour design problem. People are not sick because they eat bad food. They are sick because nobody ever taught them how much to eat, when to eat, and why it matters.
Portion. Timing. Understanding. Three everyday habits that, done consistently, can meaningfully change how you feel.
Not superfoods. Not supplements. Not expensive gadgets.
I built DietOwl because I was the person nobody was building for. The one who could not follow the plan. The one messaging at midnight because the craving would not leave. The one whose blood report sat unread in a PDF folder.
I am a technologist. I see systems. And I could see very clearly that software could do something a single dietitian never could. Make nutrition genuinely personal, at a scale the country actually needs.
So we built it. AI to handle the planning and the tracking. Behavioural science to guide the habits. Real human health coaches to answer the 11 PM message. WhatsApp because every Indian family is already on it. At a price that does not ask you to choose between your health and your household budget.
The diagnosis handed me the clearest brief I have ever received as a founder. Build what you desperately needed and could not find.
Sometimes the worst moment in your life is just the universe pointing you in the right direction.
